Chapter 12

THE FINAL CHANCE

The sight before me was like one from a fairytale. As a small girl, I had dreamed that houses like the one before me existed, but I had never before seen one, and as I became older, that particular dream faded, along with many others.

The house stood three stories tall and was made of a dark chocolate brown wood and jagged stones. The windows were large, and I knew that in the daylight they would allow more than enough sunlight to stream into the rooms. The roof peaked high, trying to reach the tops of the trees that reached to the sky, and at the base of the house lay a large wrap-around porch. There were small, glimmering lanterns leading up the stone staircase of the porch to the front door, welcoming to visitors, though I highly doubted that anyone even knew the house existed.

“What do you think?” Christian’s voice broke into my thoughts.

“Wow,” was all I could say. There was so much detail to take in, and it was all so intricate. I didn’t want to look away.

Christian laughed and reached for my hand. “We just had it built. It resembles, a little bit, where we all came from originally.”

I tore my eyes from the house to glance at him. “Really?” I asked, hoping he would explain.

“The dark wood and stone represent me. I have lived for a very long time, and the first house I lived in was a one-room house made of wood and stone.” His voice was far away and I waited for more. “The height of the house and its many rooms would be for Grace. She is very motherly, welcoming and giving. I think it has to do with the way her parents had run a bed and breakfast.” He shrugged and continued without missing a beat. “The interior, when you see it, is all owed to Isabelle. I guess you could say she is extremely modern and extravagant, and the yard was Jon’s project. He is the most humble of us all.” He spoke of Jon with such gentle care that I immediately wanted to meet the man who had made Christian care so deeply.

“I think I am ready,” I announced, and he smiled knowingly.

Christian was out of the car and around to my side, opening the door, before I had even reached for the handle. I smiled and stepped out of the car. “Show off.”

He reached for my hand and squeezed it before walking by my side up the stone stairs and to the door. I sucked in a nervous breath as his hand twisted the door knob. Christian glanced down at me with love in his eyes, and I immediately felt as though I had been miraculously filled with bravery. He pushed the door open and I stepped through. There was no one waiting to jump on me when I walked through the door, and I frowned in confusion.

“They don’t want to alarm you,” Christian explained in response to the confusion on my face.
